The proposed project will upgrade 117th Street to 10-ton design standards, provide adequate turn lanes where applicable and upgrade the two existing at-grade railroad crossings to current standards. These improvements will improve access to existing businesses along and around the 117th Street corridor, improve mobility along 117th Street, provide an east-west regional route and improve safety along the corridor and at the railroad crossings.
117th Street in Inver Grove Heights, constructed in the 1960s, is an essential transportation corridor of local and regional significance. In addition to being a busy commuter route, it serves one of the largest hubs of industrial activity in the state linking I35E on one end via Dakota County road 32, and Hwy 52. This corridor provides vital goods and services to the Twin Cities metro area and beyond. Major commercial activity is relying on this outdated, congested and substandard 117th Street corridor, which is in need of a full reconstruction and upgrade.
