Car Seat Checks
Make Sure Your Child's Car Seat is Installed Correctly
Why are car seats important?
- Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death and disability among children ages 1 to 13. 69% of deaths and severe injuries could be prevented with the proper use and installation of child car seats.
- Seven out of ten car seats are used or installed incorrectly.
- The proper use of car seats is one of the simplest and most effective methods available for protecting the lives of young children in the event of a motor vehicle crash.
Taking the time to have your child’s car seat checked may save their life.
Car Seat Clinics
Check back often as dates are added.
During Car Seat Clinic events, IGH PD & IGH FD co-host the event where Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians make sure your car seat is safely installed.
Appointments are required. Details on scheduling are provided when event dates are confirmed.
Minnesota Law Effective July 1, 2009
The Minnesota State law now requires that children under age eight, unless they are 4’9” or taller, must be in an appropriate, federally approved child safety seat or booster seat.
Infants under one year of age and weighing less than 20 pounds must ride in a rear-facing car seat.
Law enforcement agencies are allowed to stop motorists who are in violation of the seat belt law that requires drivers and passengers in all seating positions to be buckled up or in the correct child restraint.
Child Passenger Safety Facts
- Young children and babies can be seriously hurt or killed by air bags.
- Children under age 13 should always ride in the back seat.
- Never put a rear-facing baby in the front seat of a vehicle with a passenger air bag.
- Seat belts are designed for adults; a booster seat makes an adult safety belt fit correctly on a child’s body. Most children under 4’9” are not big enough to fit the adult safety belt properly.
To have your seat checked for proper installation, please contact the police department at (651) 450-2525 to make an appointment.
