On Oct. 25, IGH staff and City Councilmembers welcomed Minnesota’s first landfill to renewable natural gas (RNG) facility to Inver Grove Heights at a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by producer/distributor OPAL Fuels and NextEra Energy Marketing. The Pine Bend RNG is located next to the Republic Services, Inc. Landfill on 117th Street in IGH, and is connected to a pipeline operated by Xcel Energy. The new facility works by capturing methane from the Pine Bend Landfill and converting it to RNG. When RNG, a low-carbon gas, is used to fuel heavy-duty trucks, it eliminates the equivalent of greenhouse gas emissions from 484 trucks per year.
